Unintentional over optimization of a website is also a point to consider. Usually the search engines appreciate a comprehensive usage and density of keywords and meta tag elements, which means that you need to keep some natural flow in the text and make it both readable and understandable. You will not achieve anything if you overdo it. On the contrary you may be considered as spam and thus lose your ranking. My advice is write a content, content is king! Therefore write for users not search engines, and SEO it later. Don’t limit yourself with SEO, they are machines / algorithms that follow the same path. We should care more about our readers, they can bring traffic tenfold. Also use social media, that’s where people stay.

i think there is more to on-page SEO than what new webmasters realize and it can go into quite some detail. when designing a website, it has to be done for both the search engine, but ultimately for the visitor.
it is a learning curve as you gain more knowledge and understand how search engines work so it’s important as you say to constantly monitor and tweak your sites and stay regular touch with the latest developments in the field
Something that I have noticed is that most of the SEO guys still believe that meta keywords play important role in ranking and the just stuff keywords in meta keywords. They all need to understand that it will make difference in rankings.
